Andrew Wu:
Andrew Wu has been influenced by artistic pursuit throughout his life. Andrew’s earliest endeavors began with training as a classical violinist at the world-renowned Cleveland Institute of Music with final studies at the University of Michigan, School of Music. His work as a musician now encompass performances with the Michigan Opera Theater, Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, the American Ballet Theater, New World Symphony, and concerts with soloists such as Luciano Pavarotti, Midori, Diana Ross, and Joni Mitchell, to name a few.
In September 2000, Andrew began to explore the artistic possibilities of hot glass at the Michigan Hot Glass Workshop. Instruction and artistic guidance have come most notably from Paul Runde andAlbert Young. Additional instruction and guidance have come from John Miller, Laua Ward, Susan Holland and Christopher Watts at the Studio, Corning Museum of Glass. Andrew continues to work closely with the artists at the Michigan Hot Glass Workshop.
Artistic Statement
My training as a classical violinist has given me a unique perspective when working with glass. There are many similarities between the creation of a blown glass piece and performing a musical composition. With attention to tempo, rhythm and phrasing, greater insight into the medium is possible, as well as a unique glass composition.
